General Comments by vendor
Cropredy is owned by an
established, friendly and successful syndicate who are collectively
committed to maximising the enjoyment of the boat to the benefit of
There is a mixture of owners from young to old and the group includes both original owners and relative newcomers. The group has a number of owners with practical expertise in a variety of skills relevant to the canals but also those who by choice or time constraint are active only in participating in syndicate decisions.
Cropredy is currently (2013) based at Overwater Marina near Audlem on the Shropshire Union Canal, and can be viewed most Saturday mornings by prior arrangement with me. At last Octobers meeting we voted to move it for next year (2014) to Wigrams Turn in Oxfordshire.
As owners we believe the correct approach is for all of us to treat the boat as if we own all of it and we therefore look after it accordingly. We all get on as a group and most decisions regarding the boat are arrived at amicably.
We all meet up once a year at a central location (usually either Walsall or Daventry) and with our management company present to help us, we review the costs, formulate a next year's budget regarding what we propose to spend on the boat, and discuss any other issues which may require decisions. Any issues which arise thereafter are discussed either by phone or 'round robin' email.
We decided as a group that rather than have the hassle of arranging things like servicing, maintenance, repairs, administering the booking chart, and other administrative tasks, we would employ a management company to do this on our behalf. They could also serve as an independent arbitrator in the event of a dispute between owners (thankfully this is highly unlikely). I have been very satisfied with them. They have been excellent.
After many years of hiring I wish I had discovered this boat sharing concept years ago, because if you want to go canal boating every year it is much cheaper than hiring, and you also have the satisfaction that you actually own part of the boat. Dividing all the costs by 12 means that you can afford to spend money on making sure it is well maintained and enhanced with improvements. For example last year we decided to have a removable table installed on the cruiser stern deck and it only cost us £4 each for this.
