Booking system
A booking chart for the following calendar year is circulated
each September, in established owner priority order, where
the bookings for the next year are confirmed.

Each owner has a position for that year, and moves up a couple of places each year.

After a year at the top of the list, the owner then starts at the
bottom, so over a period of 8 years an owner’s positions would run 8, 6, 4, 2, 7, 5, 3, 1.

Each owner can choose two weeks (separately or as a fortnight) in the ‘high season’
(April to October inclusive), and one week in the remainder of the year.
The list is then circulated a 2nd time for owners to book a 4th week,
and this circulation starts from the bottom of the priority order, so being
at the bottom of the list has its compensations.

Under this system thirty-two weeks are booked before the year begins.

Allowing 2 weeks for winter maintenance this leaves 18 available weeks
to bid for, on average an extra two weeks per owner.
These remaining weeks are booked as the year progresses on
a first come first served basis with the Booking Secretary
ensuring that the bookings are fair.

General Comments About the Boat

Upon entering the boat from the semi trad stern with rear lockers containing the gas bottles mooring equipment etc. you go down steps between two large cupboards, with a wall mounted TV with integral dvd player, and 12v and 5v usb charge sockets, leading into the rear cabin with seating and Desmo sockets for either single or double tables. The seating is convertible into two single beds or one large double. Adjacent is a solid fuel stove and forward of this the Galley and cupboards which are all fully equipped with utensils and crockery. There is a fridge and separate freezer, an eye level gas oven and grill above the freezer, and a microwave oven above that, which is run from the 2kW inverter that can also provide 240 volt mains to sockets throughout the boat.

A side corridor runs forward to the bathroom with corner bath and shower, wash basin and pump-out toilet. There are clip-back doors on either side of the bathroom.

Next forward is the double bedroom with clothes storage cupboards.

Another clip-back door provides access to the forward Saloon, with a wardrobe, and a door to the right for a second toilet with wash-basin. In the saloon there is a cupboard with TV and radio. The seating is convertible to two single beds or one large double. There are two Desmo sockets to allow the single or double table to be used here. Pillows, quilts, paperback books, Board games, packs of cards, pots, pans and utensils. DVD's, Canal Guides and maps, toolkits, anchor, mooring pins, ropes, and all other sundry equipment is supplied.

Double doors which fold back again to provide a wide forward access to the front cockpit which has a cratch with cover for weatherproof protection, and a mount for a single table.

Lighting is by 12 volt LED wall and ceiling lights supplied from a bank of 4 leisure batteries which also supply the Inverter. There is a separate Starter battery. Water is stored in a large tank in the bow of the boat. The Diesel fuel tank is in the stern. There are two separate pump out toilet tanks. Heating is by radiators & calorifier supplied by heat from the engine running, or a Webasto diesel-fired heater when stationary. The solid fuel stove can be used to heat the galley & saloon.

A hydraulic bow thruster is fitted internally across the front to aid manoeuvring the boat. This runs off of a pump driven by the engine, and so this does not affect the batteries.

Running costs for 2023

(How do these figures compare?
Link opens new window)
Previously 1/8th of fees and costs were paid as and when bills were received by the treasurer.

Maintenance costs ran at between £700 and £800 pa per share until Dec 2022.

From Dec 2022 a monthly contribution of £100 from each shareholder was agreed
to be made to the treasurer who pays all outgoings without the need to request
monies every time a bill came in.

Should a shortfall arise in any one year for exceptional costs then an extra 1/8
of total shortfall is payable on request by the treasurer
( eg in 2023 extra payment was required for the electrical upgrades)
How are the running costs to be apportionedI would ask the incoming owner to take over the
monthly contribution from purchase.

General comments by vendor

* I would expect 1/8 of the value of any excess monies held on account in the maintenance/repair fund to be repaid to me on transfer of the share.

The Soudley syndicate is a friendly helpful group of people. The management is relaxed, and the finances are managed well, there are no extra hidden charges, eveything is simply split 8 ways. The boat is a pleasure to sail, and has all the equipment needed.

Pets are allowed on the condition a professional 'pet' valet is performed at the end of a cruise

Soudley is a reverse layout semi trad stern narrow boat with a rear saloon and central galley. Built by Milburn Boats on steel by Reeves in 2005. Soudley is run as a private syndicate of 8 shareholders each owning 12% of the boat, and sharing the costs.

In Jan 2023 new leisure batteries and Victron electrical management system was professionally fitted. The boat was blacked in 2021 with 2 pack epoxy.
